How to Style an Ornate Gilded Mirror at Every Budget

Few pieces change a room as quickly as an arched mirror in a carved gold frame. Here are three ways to own the look, from the famous original to an option under $250, with honest notes on what you gain and give up at each price.

Arched mirror with a carved gold frame leaning against a cream wall.

Why this mirror works. The look is inspired by antique French and Baroque mirrors. It has three clear features: an arched top, carved detail around the frame, and an aged gold finish. Together they bring warmth, light and a sense of history into a room.

It also works in more homes than you might expect. In a modern room, it becomes the one decorative piece that softens all the straight lines. In a traditional room, it looks as if it has always been there.

The best-known version today is Anthropologie's Gleaming Primrose Mirror. The brand calls it "our bestselling style of all time." It is beautiful, and it is expensive. So we compared it with lower-priced mirrors, and we explain the real differences.

What to look for before you buy. Size: measure your wall first; a floor mirror should suit the height of the room, and a wall mirror should suit the furniture below it. Frame material: resin, wood and molded PU can all look good, but they differ in weight, detail and how long they last. Weight: heavy mirrors feel solid, but need two people to move and strong fixings to hang. Hang, lean or both: some large mirrors are made only for leaning. Finish: antique gold has a soft, aged look, while bright gold looks newer and shinier, so look at customer photos, not only studio photos.

Styling notes

  • Entryway: hang a wall size above a narrow console table, about two-thirds the width of the table. Add a lamp on one side and a small tray for keys on the other.
  • Living room: place a wall size above a fireplace or sofa, or lean a floor size in a corner. Leave about 6 to 10 inches between the furniture and the bottom of the frame, and place it across from a window to bring in daylight.
  • Bedroom: lean a full-length mirror beside a dresser for a dressing corner. Keep the base 3.5 to 5 inches from the wall and secure the top with an anti-tip kit.
  • Bathroom: choose a portrait or vanity size above the sink, and check that the frame suits damp rooms.
  • Dining room: hang a large mirror across from the table. In the evening it reflects candlelight and makes the room feel brighter.
  • Mix old and new. Pair the carved frame with simple modern pieces, such as a plain linen sofa or a stone side table.
  • Repeat the gold with one or two other warm metals, such as a brass lamp or picture frame. A lot of chrome nearby can look out of place.
  • Use warm white bulbs, around 2700K. They make antique gold glow, while cool white light can make it look flat.
  • Give it space. One ornate piece on a wall is enough.
  • Wipe the frame with a dry, soft cloth. Spray glass cleaner onto the cloth, not the mirror, and keep gilded frames out of strong direct sunlight.

Large mirrors are heavy, so always move them with two people. Use an anti-tip kit with any leaning mirror, especially in homes with children or pets. To hang a mirror, screw into wall studs or use anchors rated for more than the mirror's weight.
