Cream ceramic table lamp with a pleated shade, glowing on a wooden sideboard in front of a stone wall.

Stone and timber are warm materials, but after dark they can feel heavy. A sculptural lamp changes that. The ceramic base adds a soft, handmade shape. The pleated shade spreads the light gently, so the glow falls across the wall and not only onto the table. A small touch of warm brass finishes the look.

The hard part is restraint. Each of these pieces has its own texture. Put too many together and the room starts to feel busy. Below are three lamps at three prices, and the simple rules we use to keep the look calm.

The curated selection

The Splurge

Ruins Cream Ceramic Sculptural Table Lamp with Pleated Shade by Athena Calderone

Crate & Barrel

$429

Designed by Athena Calderone for Crate & Barrel. The cream base is made of two textured forms that meet around an open space, so the lamp plays with light and shadow even when it is off. The tapered, pleated shade is natural linen.

Details: 21" H x 21" W · Two bulb sockets, each with a pull chain · 8 ft fabric cord · Bulbs not included

Trade-off: The highest price here, and you need to buy two bulbs.

The Balanced Choice

Rowena Interiors Chloe Stoneware Table Lamp with Tapered Base and Pleated Shade

Wayfair

$75

A stoneware base with a hand-painted terracotta stripe, topped with a cream pleated linen shade. The warm stripe picks up the colors of stone and wood.

Details: 16.34" H x 13.78" W · One standard E26 bulb, up to 60W · 4.8 out of 5 (31 reviews)

Trade-off: Smaller than the Splurge. Some reviewers say the shade sits low, so the bulb can show. Choose a short bulb. Returns within 30 days.

Styling notes

  • Give each surface one star. Let the sculptural lamp be the main piece on the table. Keep everything else low and simple, such as a short stack of books and one small dish.
  • Repeat materials instead of adding new ones. Choose three, such as ceramic, linen and brass, and repeat them around the room. A cream vase across the room can echo a cream lamp base.
  • Keep brass small. Use it in small doses: a candle holder, a tray or a picture light. Lacquered brass stays bright for longer. Unlacquered brass darkens over time, most of all where hands touch it.
  • Use the stone wall. Place the lamp close to a stone wall. Light that crosses the wall at a steep angle makes the texture stand out. On a smooth painted wall, the same trick shows every bump.
  • Choose warm bulbs. Use LED bulbs at 2700K for warm white light, or 2200K for a softer, candle-like glow in the evening. Look for a CRI of 90 or higher so wood and stone keep their true color.
  • Get the size right. On a side table, the bottom of the shade should sit at eye level when you are seated. The table and lamp together should measure about 58 to 64 inches from the floor. The shade should not be wider than the table, and the base should cover no more than a third of the tabletop.

Pleated shades are made of fabric or paper. Never go above the lamp's maximum wattage, and use LED bulbs, which run cooler.
