Pedestal Elegance: Styling the Mid-Century Tulip Table in Compact Spaces
One stem instead of four legs. Here is how Eero Saarinen's round side table compares with two lower-priced pedestal tables, and how to make one work in a small room.

In the 1950s, Eero Saarinen looked under the tables and chairs of his day and did not like what he saw. He said he wanted to "clear up the slum of legs." His answer was a single pedestal: one stem rising from a round foot to hold the top. Knoll still makes his Pedestal Collection today, with a cast aluminum base and a marble or laminate top.
The idea works especially well in small rooms. One stem leaves more floor in view, so the room feels more open, and you can pull a chair in close without hitting a leg. Below are three round pedestal tables at three prices, and how to style one in a compact space.

Styling notes
- Match the arm. A side table should sit at or just below the arm of your sofa or chair, ideally within 2 inches. A slightly lower table is easier to use than a taller one.
- Leave a small gap. Keep a few inches between the table and the sofa so the corner does not look crowded.
- Choose round for tight spots. A round top has no corners to catch knees or bags, which helps in narrow rooms and near doorways.
- Let the floor show. Keep the space under the table clear. Baskets or stacks under the top take away the open look the pedestal gives you.
- Use one stone piece per seating area. A marble or concrete top is a strong feature. Pair it with softer materials nearby, such as linen, wool or wood.
- Care for marble. Wine, coffee and lemon can mark marble, so use coasters and wipe spills quickly. Knoll's marble tops have a clear protective coating that can turn slightly warmer in tone over time.
