The Throw and the Pouf: How to Make a Small Living Room Cozy for Winter
A small living room can feel warm and welcoming in winter without new furniture. Two pieces do most of the work: a good throw and a pouf. Here is how to choose and use both, at three prices.

When it gets cold, a small living room can start to feel bare. And when friends come over, there is never quite enough room to sit.
You do not need a bigger room or a new armchair to fix this. A good throw makes the sofa warmer and softer. A pouf gives you an extra seat, a footrest and a small table, and it moves wherever you need it. Together, they make the room feel lived in, not crowded.
How to style a throw
- Use one or two, not a pile. One throw over the arm or the back corner of the sofa looks inviting. A stack of blankets looks like laundry.
- Take the color from the room. Pick a color that is already in your rug, your cushions or a picture on the wall, so the throw looks planned.
- Mix textures. A ribbed or chunky throw next to smooth linen or leather adds warmth you can see.
- Choose the material for how you live. Wool is the warmest. Cotton is lighter and easier to wash, which helps if you have kids or pets.
- Fold it simply. Fold the throw in thirds the long way and lay it over the arm. For a relaxed look, hold it by one corner and let it fall over the back corner of the sofa.
- Keep the rest out of sight. Store spare throws in a basket or inside a pouf.

Verve Culture Mexican Handloomed Blanket, Black Stripe
Verve Culture
$120
Hand loomed from 100% cotton. Verve Culture credits it to artisan Rodrigo Leonel Villanueva Cuevas, who was born and raised in San Sebastián Tutla, Oaxaca, and comes from four generations of craftspeople. Big enough for a sofa or the end of a bed.
Details: 80" x 60" · 100% cotton · Hand loomed · Machine wash cold, air dry
Trade-off: Cotton is lighter than wool, so it is less warm on very cold nights. The size and color vary a little from one blanket to the next because each one is made by hand. The Multi color is sold out.

Use it as a footrest on a quiet night, a seat when friends visit, and a small table when you put a tray on top.
Check four things before you buy:
- Height. If you want to sit on it, choose a pouf close to the height of your sofa seat. A lower pouf works better as a footrest. Never go taller than the sofa seat.
- Shape. A round pouf is the easiest to walk around in a tight room.
- Space. Leave about a foot of free floor around it, so people can walk past.
- Color. A light pouf keeps a small room feeling open. A dark or patterned one becomes a feature, so let it be the only one in the room.

How to put them together
- Make a warm corner. Put the pouf in front of a chair or the end of the sofa, with the throw close by. Feet up, blanket on.
- Turn the pouf into a table. Put a flat tray on top, a little smaller than the top of the pouf, so cups stay steady.
- Use an empty pouf as storage. If your pouf arrives unstuffed, fill it with spare throws, pillows and bedding. It holds its shape, and your extra blankets are out of sight.
- Warm up the light. Use lamps with warm white bulbs of 2700K, and light the corners. For more on this, read The Rug and the Light.
- Let the rug pull it together. A rug big enough for the front legs of your sofa and chairs makes the throw and pouf look like part of one room.
Which one should you choose?
Choose the Splurge if you want the warmest throw, made of wool in the USA, and a pouf that arrives ready to sit on.
Choose the Balanced Choice if you want handmade pieces with a story: a cotton blanket hand loomed in Mexico and a leather pouf hand-stitched in Morocco.
Choose the Save if you want the cozy look for the least money.
You can also mix tiers. Buy the throw now and the pouf later. Each one works on its own.
